Interview With Mad Orange Fireworks
By MTS Discover | 15th May, 2015
When asked to describe their music, the Mad Orange Fireworks described it as “a blend, a juncture where pop, blues, jazz, funk and rock meet.” The three-piece band is known for its originality, musicianship and stunning stage presence.
Band members, Michael Dias (Vocals/Guitars), Kaushik Kumar (Bass / Vocals) and Deepak Raghu (Drums) seem to have brought about their own genre of music which they call ‘orange rock’ – with lots of fun and quirk on the side.
Mad Orange Fireworks perform at venues all over the country regularly. They have also been known for their tribute shows to bands like Pearl Jam and the Beatles. This popular band based out of Bangalore has a very interesting story to tell. We caught up with them, here’s what happened.

1) What would you say your biggest influences are? Tell us a bit about the beginning of your journey.
Primarily, all the big names, right from Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to the guys who are killing it even now, like the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam, and of course all our local heroes like Thermal and a Quarter and Avial etc etc.
Our band started off when Michael Dias, a long time bedroom singer/songwriter, decided to quit his IT job and follow his dream. He soon caught hold of Kaushik Kumar who joined in on bass and Shravan Bendapudi on drums and started off as a three piece rock act that played their own music. Later Shravan was replaced by Deepak Raghu, and Mad Orange Fireworks still continues rocking it out.
2) What would you say your biggest achievement has been?
Our biggest achievement has been our ever growing fan base. We like making music and there is nothing more overwhelming than seeing so many people digging it. Over the past 4 years the band has been together, that’s one thing that’s been growing and getting better with every show.
3) What is the biggest difficulty an independent artist/band in India faces today?
Opportunities, recognition, respect, stability and so on. Although most people think it’s really cool that we lead Rock Star lives, there are so many difficulties along this path that we have chosen. But at the end of the day, we chose this path for the music and we try to not let anything else get to us as much as possible.

4) Tell us your top 5 all-time favourite tracks
– Dancing Days – Led Zeppelin
– Driven to tears – The Police
– Go with the flow – Queens of the Stone Age
– Love Boat Captain – Pearl Jam
– She came in through the bathroom window – The Beatles
5) What are your own band’s top 5 tracks, according to you?
– Get Lost
– Shaking My Ground
– Nothing Left To Mend
– On The Ledge
– Break My Fall
6) Where do you think your music is headed in the near future?
We are currently working on our 2nd album which is to be released next month. Now comparing our sound to what it was on the first album, the band has gotten heavier and more mature. We are personally digging our new sound and are very excited about the new album. We are hoping it gets us a lot more mileage and brings along many more opportunities to play across new cities and to a whole lot of new fans.
Our recent escapade of making our first ever music video turned out to be a great success and we would like to make more in the near future as well.
Here’s wishing the Mad Orange Fireworks lots of luck for the future. Do check out their music online. You could also catch them live on Friday, 15th May 2015 at 9 pm, The Humming Tree, Bangalore.
